▷ The 11 Best Things to Do in Alphabet City NYC 2021 • The Ultimate Guide

The Alphabet City neighborhood gets its name from its location in Lower Manhattan: it begins south with 1st Street and is bounded by 1st Avenue to the west. As a result, all street names have only letters in their names.

I like Alphabet City, which is located between the East Village and the East River. It is a residential area with many bars and smaller restaurants and therefore offers you a glimpse of “normal” New York.

There are no big and famous sights here, but you can go out and have a good time in Alphabet City. Which bars and restaurants in Alphabet City should be on your itinerary for New York City, I show you here in my best list. Have fun!

By the way: you’ll find many more New York City spots in our Loving New York travel guides.

My TOP 5 Things To Do in Alphabet City NYC

    • Walk along the East River Promenade
  • Relax in Tompkins Square Park
  • Enjoy the view of the Williamsburg Bridge from John V. Lindsay East River Park
  • Visit the Karma Gallery for Contemporary Art
  • Eat the best fried chicken in NYC at the Bobwhite Counter

Is Alphabet City NYC dangerous?

No – once upon a time there were drug problems here around Tompkins Square Park, but now it’s more like the adjacent East Village.

Where is Alphabet City located?

Alphabet City is located at the eastern part of Lower Manhattan directly on the East River River.

Best Guided Tours in Alphabet City

There are no special walking tours just for this neighborhood. Instead, there is a huge selection of walking tours in the adjacent East Village and Lower East Side, which is very similar to Alphabet City.

These are the most popular walking tours that we can recommend to you:

  1. A_Slice_of_Brooklyn_Pizza_Tour

01 A Slice of Brooklyn Pizza Tour

The A Slice of Brooklyn Pizza Tour is a combination of sightseeing tour, bus and walking tour. It starts not far from Union Square Park in Manhattan: with your New York guide you drive to Brooklyn to get to know one of the most important neighborhoods like  Sunset Park, DUMBO, Bay Ridge and also Coney Island.

On this sightseeing tour you will learn where movies like Goodfellas, Once Upon in America or Annie Hall were filmed and you will stop at two of the best pizzerias in Brooklyn. Because pizza and New York simply belong together!

  2. Best_Walking_Tour_NYC_NYC_Lower_East_Side_Walking_and_Food_Tour

02 NYC Lower East Side Walking and Food Tour

The Lower East Side is still an absolute insider tip among the neighborhoods of New York City and a part of Lower Manhattan that I love to visit. There are countless authentic bars and delis, some of which have been family-owned for more than 100 years and are thus an important part of the community.

The NYC Lower East Side Walking and Food Tour deals exactly with these small spots and stores and is therefore a TOP Thing to do for foodies!

  3. Best_Haunted_Walking_Tour_NYC_East_Village_Haunted_Manhattan_Walking_Tour

03 East Village Haunted Manhattan Walking Tour

On this haunted walking tour you’ll explore one of the oldest neighborhoods in Manhattan: the East Village. And at night! There are 13 haunted locations on the list – from historic pubs to the Public Theater to a subway stop known for its “ghost train”.

The Best Bars in Midtown Manhattan

  1. Ardesia Wine Bar is one of my favorite spots in Hells Kitchen: not only do you have a great selection of wines (aha), but also a stylish ambiance and really good food at the same time. Be sure to try the Garlic Shrimp Skewers and the Mozzarella & Bacon Sandwich!

  2. connollyspubandrestaurant

    CONNOLLY’S + PERFECT PINT

The bar Connolly’s Pub and Restaurant is an Irish pub like it is in the book and is for me one of the best pubs in New York. A huge, rustic bar, lots of colourful taps and tons of good whiskey immediately attract attention. The kitchen is also excellent. The burgers are a blast!

  3. Dear_Irving_on_Hudson

The bar Dear Irving on Hudson is a real insider tip. Located very close to Times Square, you can look down on Manhattan’s “urban canyons” from here and be relatively undisturbed. The bar is small and cozy and not yet as crowded as many others in the neighborhood. The cocktail menu is not that big, but the cocktails are really good.

  4. Electric Lemon Rooftop Bar New York

On the 24th floor of the Equinox Hotel in the Hudson Yards you will find the rooftop bar Electric Lemon – I myself have been here several times and am thrilled every time. The atmosphere here is very special and the view over the Hudson River at sunset is amazing.

The first area of the Electric Lemon Rooftop Bar consists of several lounge furniture and tables, then you will immediately notice the stylish outdoor bar and glass fireplace (and the view of The Vessel), which really comes into its own in the evening. Add to that a huge wire sculpture and a water basin – really nice!

The larger area with lots of comfy lounge chairs is the part where you probably spend the most time. Especially if you’ve been out on the High Line, the Electric Lemon Rooftop Bar is a really nice spot to relax. They make you pay for it, too: Cocktails cost $19.

  5. Equinox_Hotel_Hudson_Yards_NYC_IMG_8877

5 Stars | The Equinox Hotel at Hudson Yards is one of the newest and most trendy hotels in New York, and we were lucky enough to stay there for two days. The highlight (apart from the hotel itself) is the rooftop bar and lounge overlooking the Hudson River. Spectacular.

  6. 190111215815001_Refinery_rooftop_bar

Very close to Bryant Park you can find a beautiful bar in NYC on top of the Refinery Hotel. This two-level rooftop bar offers stunning views of the Empire State Building, great cocktails (by Alex Ott) and a nice atmosphere.

  7. 230Fifth

230 Fifth is arguably the most famous rooftop bar in New York City. It is well known for its stunning views of the Empire State Building great cocktails and large outside seating area. Whether in summer or winter, the 230 Fifth is always a good idea. The sunset is always enchanting and in the winter cuddled under blankets and heated mushrooms has also something to sit.

  8. Rooftop_Freedom_Tower

One of the most popular rooftop bars in Times Square is Bar 54, located on the roof of the Hyatt Times Square Hotel New York, on the 54th floor (hence the name), where you can enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city. The Bar 54 is also a lounge, so you can go there even if the weather is not so good.

  9. Bar_170423115755006-2

A great bar with a great selection of cocktails and gins. On the menu you will find small dishes like crispy calamari, grilled chicken or burrata.

  10. 11203569_859103490827529_7250731644775136023_o

In the Cantina Rooftop Bar you feel like in the Caribbean, surrounded by tropical plants you eat delicious guacamole and drink very well made cocktails with classical Mexican music. Besides tequila in every variation, there is a large selection of other delicious drinks: Try the Cantina Margarita.

  11. Cibar_Lounge_NYC_190527105655001_1600x800

The Cibar close to Union Square is one of those hidden little bars that do not really look like anything from the outside. However, if you are inside and want to have one of their delicious drinks (I’m not a rum lover, but on the bartender’s recommendation I tried the “Hedo Rick“. Crazy!) you know what I mean! The Cibar is really a nice bar in New York!

  12. Bar

Last but not least on our list of the most beautiful bars in New York City, I would like to recommend the Cibar near Union Square. It’s also one of these hidden places, where you have to walk into to evaluate their specialty.

  13. connollyspubandrestaurant

  14. connollyspubandrestaurant

  15. DI

Dear Irving on Hudson is an absolute secret in the city located on the 40th & 41st floor inside the Aliz Hotel.  In the middle of Times Square, this bar pairs the glimpse of the city lights and skyline views with the best cocktails in town.

  16. Haven_Rooftop_Bar_New_York_02

In the heart of the Theatre District on Times Square you will find the Haven Rooftop & Restaurant. It is on the 10th floor of the Sanctuary Hotel at 47th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue and offers you a sensational perspective. Although it is in Times Square, it is surprisingly quiet. I love the mix of “being in the middle of the city” and “still having peace and quiet” – and that’s exactly what you can expect there.

  17. La_Piscine_Hotel_Americano_01

This spot is located on the roof of the boutique hotel Hotel Americano. Besides a small pool, this rooftop bar with its many daybeds and cabanas offers pure relaxation. From here you have a great view of the Empire State Building and over the Hudson River. If you are wondering about a lot of Mexican-influenced drinks, this is easy to clarify: the owner of the rooftop bar La Piscine is a Mexican hotel chain.

  18. The_Standard_High_Line_Le_Bain_Rooftop_Bar_New_York

Le Bain Rooftop Bar ranks high among the best clubs and rooftop bars in NYC. A good cocktail will cost you around 12 dollars and entry is free, meaning that prices are not as outlandish as in some other popular NYC nightclubs. Defintiely worth a visit, especially if you are looking for an awesome view over Manhattan!

  19. Monarch_Rooftop_Bar_New_York

    Stitched Panorama

I have a great rooftop bar for you: the Monarch Rooftop Lounge. It is not only beautifully designed, consists of one of the most beautiful lounges in town and an outdoor area, but also offers you a sensational view of the Empire State Building. So if you are looking for a spot where good food, fair prices (!) and relaxed music come together, then the Monarch Rooftop Lounge should be on your myNY list.

  20. Bar_170423115755006-7

You can choose your favourite from over 300 whiskeys. The barkeepers know their way around sensationally well and can mix really good cocktails with them. Beer lovers will not be left out either: over 125 beers are on the menu.

  21. Ophelia_Bar_New_York_190524162612001

Ophelia is one of the newest additions to the local bar scene in Midtown East. The beautiful bar in NYC comes with 360-degree views of the East River and Manhattan skyline. Here we were sceptical at first, because after the new opening a huge PR wave started. Everyone was talking about how great and good Ophelia is. Even though we were in NYC at that exact time, we wanted to wait for the first wave of euphoria and so we were there only recently. The Ophelia is on our best list because they surprised us positively: great drinks, a very nice and harmonious interior and a wonderful view. A tiny little area is even open like a rooftop bar – what more could you want?

  22. Oscar_Wilde_Bar_NYC_190524163257001

Even though we like it clean and neat when it comes to interior design, Oscar Wilde is a must and had to make its appearance on our list of the most beautiful bars in NYC. Even if I felt overstimulated after 2 hours of being there: the place is definitely worth a visit!

  23. Birreria_Rooftop_Bar_1600x960

On the roof of the EATALY you can not only drink home-brewed beer, but also eat wonderfully. It is – not surprisingly – typically Italian and on a high level: there are sandwiches with Portobello mushrooms and Taleggio cheese, antipasti and many other delicious things.

  24. 210601160607001_Social_Music_Series_at_Salon_de_Ning_Rooftop_Bar_and_Terrace

Especially in the evening a visit to the Rooftopbar is a highlight: the lights of the city shine, the many cars on 5th Avenue are in constant motion and you enjoy the silence in airy heights and you have spectacular views of two of the most famous sights of the Big Apple: the probably most famous shopping mile of the world “5th Avenue” and the green lung of Manhattan – Central Park.

  25. SixtyFive_Bar_Rainbow_Room_New_York_06

Due to its great location you can look almost 50 kilometres (!) in good weather – in several directions: north, west and south. By the way, the SixtyFive Bar and Rooftop-Lounge is NOT open on weekends! Attention: there is a dress code: Jeans & Jacket are ok, Sneakers and Basecaps are not.

  26. skyroom_bar_new_york

One of the hippest lounges in New York is located at over 120 meters (400 feet) on the roof of the Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott Times Square. The name says it all: from here you can enjoy a sensational view of just about anything you want, from Times Square to Hudson to the Empire. Thanks to the 360 degree view!

  27. Spyglass_new_york

If you’re looking for a rooftop bar with a fantastic view of the Empire State Building, you should not only think of the 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar but also of the Bar Spyglass. You will find it on the 2nd floor of the Archer Hotel in Midtown and it is also perfect for cold days (autumn & winter!) because it has a great indoor area.

  28. Cocktail_Bar_Tara_Rose_Kips_Bay_Midtown

American restaurant and a really good cocktail bar at the same time – that’s exactly what Tara Rose is! There is a good selection of burgers, sandwiches and salads. I can recommend the Greek Fries with mint and feta and the Steak & Potatoes. Just awesome!

My tip: go to happy hour at Tara Rose – always Monday to Thursday from 1pm to 7pm.

  29. tavern29_200227115158001

Tavern29 is a pub whose roof has been converted into an American beer garden. Here you will surely find something you like: Choose from beer, wine, scotch, whiskey or canapés. By the way, Tavern 29 also offers two Happy Hours!

  30. The_Campbell_Apartment_NYC_Bar_190524154906001

This small bar inside Grand Central Station just got newly renovated and is one of the hidden secrets of the Grand Central Station.

  31. the_heights_rooftop_bar_nyc170801125450001_1600x800

  33. perfect_pint_1280x800

In front of the wooden facade of the Irish Pub’s The Perfect Pint hangs an oversized three-dimensional mockup of a filled pint. In the multi-storey pub you will find brick walls, bar stools partly made from old beer barrels and 40 draught beers. Perfect to enjoy the really good food. The Perfect Pint is available twice in Midtown, the East Side location even has a rooftop bar.

  34. The_Press_Lounge_bar_190410145107004

When it comes to the best rooftop bars in NYC, The Press Lounge is a place you have to visit to enjoy a drink. On top of the Ink48 Hotel, this gorgeous bar offers stunning views of Manhattan and the Hudson River.

  35. The_Skylark_Rooftop_Bar_02

You think the rooftop bar season is over in late autumn and winter? Not in New York! With the rooftop bar “The Skylark” in the Garment District you can enjoy fresh air and great views of the New York City canyons even in the cold season.

  36. Rooftop_Bar_170423115755023-2

The classic New York cocktail bar is located at Chelsea Market. Here you can get very innovative drinks – try the Monkey Business with whiskey, walnut and banana. For the small hunger there are sandwiches and salads.

  37. Restaurant_170423115755029-9

The Tia Pol is totally inconspicuous from the outside, but it has it all! We became aware of it by chance, because we had some time and desire to eat something small before our boat tour. The spot became famous for its sangria from the barrel (!), it is much much better than it sounds! The tapas are fancy, typically Spanish and you are definitely among New Yorkers here. Wonderful!

  38. 181017111255002_1600x960

On the 30th floor of the Kimberly Hotel you will find the rooftop bar and lounge “Upstairs at the Kimberly Hotel”. Located in midtown, you have a spectacular view of one of the most beautiful buildings in New York: the Chrysler Building. Not all rooftop bars offer a limitless panoramic view, but the “Upstairs” can offer it.

  39. Versa_nyc_190613112609001

Versa NYC is a Rooftop Bar and Restaurant located inside The Renaissance Hotel in Midtown NYC and provides beautiful views of the city and the Empire State Building. The outdoor portion of the bar is relatively small compared to other rooftop bars, but it is quite intimate. If you’re a small group of 2 -4 people, this could be a great place to relax and enjoy the weather.

▷ The 33 Best Bars in Lower Manhattan 2021 ▷ My Insider Tips & Map

The Sex and the City tours in New York City are among the most popular tours of all – in addition to the Sex and the City tour by bus, there is this walking tour that takes you to the most important spots of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte.

What to expect on the three-hour Sex and the City Hotspots Tour in New York

You will meet with a local guide at Central Park to start your tour. The first destination is the famous The Plaza Hotel, which played an important role between Carrie and her Mr. Big at the end of season 2.

After that, you’ll head to Perry Street in beautiful West Village – it’s one of my absolute favorite neighborhoods in New York (not only because of Sex and the City). As fans of Sex and the City New York, you of course know what is located here: the apartment of Carrie Bradshaw

  • Fun Fact #1: in the series, the apartment was on the Upper East Side, so in a completely different part of NYC (“245 East 73rd Street”).
  • Fun Fact #2: Sarah Jessica Parker lived just a block away from Perry Street on Charles Street until the end of 2020.

What can’t be missed on a Sex and the City tour? The Magnolia Bakery! Although it was only featured briefly on the show, it became one of the most important spots for Sex and the City fans. Do just as Carrie and Miranda do: buy a delicious cupcake and you’re good to go!

By the way, in addition to Magnolia Bakery in the West Village, there are now other branches in New York. You can also buy the cupcakes made famous by Sex and the City at Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Terminal, Bloomingdales, Columbus Circle and the Upper West Side.

Next stop on the walking tour is the Buddakan restaurant. This is where the rehearsal dinner was held before Carrie’s wedding – and therefore couldn’t be left off the list.

The same goes for Onieal’s Bar and Restaurant in Little Italy, which is another important stop. It is just as significant for Sex and the City fans as the Central Perk café is for fans of the “Friends” series.

▷ The TOP Rooftop Bars in Midtown 2021 ▷ My Insider Tips & Map
