When New York-based architecture firm Archi-Tectonics won an international design competition to masterplan the Hangzhou Asian Games Park for the 2022 Asian Games — the largest international multi-sports competition after the Olympics — the architects knew from the start that their design vision would be guided by sustainable legacy use. Unlike the high-cost Olympic venues that are abandoned after the event, Archi-Tectonics designed two stadiums engineered to accommodate future use, from concerts to night markets.

Archi-Tectonics has designed two stadiums to bookend a mile-long park in the 116-acre Hangzhou Asian Games Park: the 5,000-seat Tennis Table Stadium and the 5,000-seat Field Hockey Stadium. To accommodate future uses, the Tennis Table Stadium will feature a hybrid seating system that combines stadium and amphitheater seating styles to host not only sporting events but concerts and other performances as well. The Field Hockey Stadium can be transformed into a space for outdoor gatherings such as night markets and open-air concerts.
“Without a plan for the future, projects like this risk becoming white elephants — unused, expensive to maintain, and disruptive to a city’s fabric,” said Winka Dubbeldam, founding principal of Archi-Tectonics. “We planned Asian Games Park with Hangzhou’s future in mind, designing it to become a fixture of daily life in the neighborhood, support continued urban growth, and make for a more sustainable and resilient city.”
To bring locals and visitors to the site even after the Asian Games are over, the architects anchored the linear site with an “eco-village” featuring green-roofed shops, restaurants, cafes, kiosks and outdoor gathering areas shaded by custom “Solar Wings,” solar panel-topped canopies that power an outdoor lighting system. Integrated into the urban fabric, the lush mixed-use area will also double as an “urban sponge” that harvests, filters and reuses stormwater runoff. The Hangzhou Asian Games Park is scheduled to finish construction in 2021.
